Summer solstice (june 21st) is sort of a big deal up here, as the sun doesn't set until 11:42 p.m. and so people are up late fishing, hiking, biking, yada yada yada. We went on a free hike sponsored by the Eagle River Nature Reserve. We hiked to the river, were the guides built a fire and we all cut willows and roasted marshmallows and ate smores. Of all the things I've seen up here, some of the most beautiful views were of this glaciated valley that the eagle river runs through. It started out cloudy, but the sun burned through the clouds just for us and we had a glorious hike and even met some new friends! Here are some pics of the day.
There are cottonwoods in Alaska. Giant ones. This one is called the Grandfather Tree. The kids could have stayed there all day.
Mr. Jace is walking!! Well not in this shot, but he is toddling around these days.
Jace mooching smores from Austin, the gourmet smore maker.
Avery and Daddy. One of Avery's pony tail holders snapped leaving her a little lopsided.
Quinton's new favorite thing is to whittle sticks he found a cozy spot to carve away.

Wow what fun adventures! And soo beautiful! I have been thinking of you guys with the long summer days-is it light until like 11:00 or so everyday??
That's so fun! I wish we could be there and have lots of fun with you guys still! Trevor's fishing now--well, not until tomorrow. But he texted me when he was in Anchorage. He only had a short layover on the way over, but a long one on the way back. I told him to remember to call you guys. I don't know if he will though because he said: I'm just going to see Mike in 3 weeks at AGD. Blah, blah. We should still go. Anyway, his layover is on July 1st from 1-9 pm--if he doesn't call Mike. So, that was a really long comment not about your blog :)
Looks like you had fun! That's what's so great about AK you're never hurting for something to do!
Isn't that place great! We didn't get to go on a guided hike though and it looks like oodles of fun.
Wow - thanks for sharing the photos. Your kids are so lovely, and the landscape is just beautiful. And, it's nice to see you even though I don't get to "see" you. :-)
That is so cool. We also enjoy late sun sets her in southern Alberta. It doesn't get dark until 10pm most days. I love it! What a fun place for you guys to get out and enjoy some fresh air!
Summer solstice sounds amazing. The sun has been setting here at 9:30, and I'm amazed even by that! What a fun adventure you had...Alaska looks so beautiful. Jace is walking!!! Sounds like he and Anders are doing the same thing (never mind that Anders is 14 months!!! I'm just glad he's finally on track). Anders is toddling around all over the place and so proud of himself.
Wow, what a cute family you have. They are all getting so big! I can't wait to see you all again sometime. It was fun to hang out with your kids last summer at Clear Creek. I hope that can happen again before they are all grown up!
Your family is so cute, and what an adventure to live in Alaska. I'm sure it's tough at times but what fab memories for your sweet family. I can't believe how much Avery is a little mags.....not to mention Emmy is a little Trisdan! You are to kind to me with the Design stuff. Speaking of Design Star, I tivo it and would love to take it on someday. Mom for now though :)
Good luck with those long days! I can barely last until 9:00!
Your little adventure was beautiful! It looks like the whole fam and a blast. Jace is getting so big! Lilly is walking now too. I will have to post a video
Oooh. . . what an adventure to live in Alaska. And what a lovely tradition to make a big fuss over summer solstice. It looks like tons of fun. How do you get your kids to sleep on non-party nights with all that light? How do YOU sleep is really the more important question?
Fun pictures! I love the lop-sided ponytails. Those darn elastics! Happy birthday to Jace soon! He's a cutie! I can't believe it's been a year since we've seen you guys!
This looks beautiful and like a lot of fun!
Mike, Way to represent Redd Mechanical in Alaska. You've made us proud.
Looks like Quinton is making good use of the pocketknife that Grandpa gave him. (I'm still waiting for him to cut himself - after all, David dit that when he was 16,)
