dear maggie: no more homemade costumes.

I have this deep rooted need to make Halloween costumes. Inevitably i spend most of Oct 31st(starting at 12:00 a.m. halloween morning) sewing, hot gluing, dying, ect, ect. I am an onery woman by the time trick or treaters start ringing the bell, and at least one costume is a disaster. This year only my little chicken was a winner, and it was mostly because of the little guy IN the chicken suit. Austin wanted to be a spider, i made a fabulous outfit complete with numerous eyeballs and large bloody fangs, but when we put it on Austin, he looked like Bjork on a good day. Needless to say we both refused doning the thing. so austin had to resort to the much used spiderman costume. Quinton looked faulous as a mummy for about 10 minutes, then he walked and the carefully wrapped fabric (it took me an hour to wrap him) began sliding from his scrawny frame. (which is something i can't comprehend since he eats 3 boiled eggs, two bowls of cereal and 3 pieces of toast everyday and that's just breakfast) He ended up being a ninja. Only avery made it all through the day in one costume. She loved the red hair. Not that costumes even matter up here anyway, we had to wear coats, hats, and gloves as Halloween night temperatures were in the teens! I hope next year some one will take pitty on me and smack me before i take out the sewing machine.

I love the costumes! The chicken is especially darling. And those mermaid lips--honey, she's a stunner!

I'm diggin' that red hair too! And those kissy-lips...WOW! (Is it possible that she could look even more like you with red hair??!)

The boys look great as well. I've never even attempted one of those home-made costumes and don't think I ever will. Just can't do it!

I once bought a homemade costume...

I think they look great--I wish I could've seen the spider.

Holy cow--so Quinton's quite a little eater, huh? He is tall and thin, isn't he. Tyler eats a lot, too--but not like that. How would it be? Food sounds so good to me these days and I'm trying NOT to gain 50 lbs. this time.

Anyway, Avery looks ADORABLE and so does the chicken :) I guess he was up with you all night, too? He looks pretty tired. Ashley was a chicken, too. But your costume is much cuter.

Cute chicken costume! Avery makes a great Ariel. Don't you love having dressups? Kate changed her mind about her costume lots of times, but it didn't matter because we had lots of choices. Too bad boys aren't so easy. Austin is a great spiderman (was he spiderman or superman? my memory is so short!)! And, I can't believe how long Quinton's legs are. Too bad the mummy costume didn't work out. I think it looked good. Anyway...I think you are amazing and very crafty! Can't wait to see what you come up with next year.

I think the chicken is darling! My friend's daughter wanted to be a chicken and she absolutely refused. Look how cute. I also love making costumes, but we'll see how that goes after I have more than one child. The other kids looked great too. Quinton is getting really tall!

I love the costumes. Boy, I was feeling sorry for myself living in cold ole Wisconsin. I will just count my blessings. It was almost balmy weather here compared to the teens. Good luck. (well, actually it was warm, but the week before it was cold, but not in the teens). Anyway...

So fun. I think we will have indoor and out door costumes because every year we do the church trick or treat and people see the outfit inside before hand and then when we go in the neighborhood we have to bundle up so anything we can drape over our bodies is better. Maybe a tent? Actually I just figured if I painted their faces a lot or had a mask then it would be okay for outside and people would think they had a costume on. :) Fun post. Did you make it to the hospital? We looked and looked but maybe it's because you were still working on all those fun costumes.

Oh and I always want to make a costume over buying one. I just told the boys a story about how I started to make my own at a young at (My mom didn't really like to make them) and our school had a parade and contest every year. I was so sad when my card board box turned TV didn't win. I mean come on that's some great creativity. :)

You're my hero! I love all the costumes! It must be the mummy wrappings, but I had to do a double take on Quinton's picture. He is so tall and skinny. And Avery...even amid all things boy, she remains all girl. :)

Oh you crack me up! They all looked darling-love the chicken. Can't believe how tall Quinton is! And way to go to attempt and make costumes. I always think I will and end up buying instead. Maybe next year.

I love Jace-the-chicken, love "Ariel's" fish face and when did Quinton get so tall and lanky?! He looks like my dad in the old reel-to-reel movies we used to watch of him when he was a kid. I would have loved to see a picture of Austin as "Bjork-on-a-good-day". That would be a scary costume in and of itself!

I used to be that way too! But I decided that unless I start making them in January it will never get done. Thank goodness I have had success in the buying department lately. Oh and we finally got a good year, no snow at least!
